BCBSNC Credit Union's Skip-A-Payment is back!
Need a little relief during the holidays?
Do you ever feel that you could use a little extra cash? Especially now with the holidays approaching? Wouldn't it be nice if you could skip a car loan or personal loan payment to give you some extra money in your pocket?
You can! At BCBSNC Credit Union we value members who keep their loans* in good standing and are current. To say "Thank You" for being financially responsible, we are offering a "Skip-A-Payment" option to our members. Beginning December 1, 2008 through February 28, 2009, you may have the option to skip one of the following:
- one monthly payment,
- two consecutive bi-weekly payments, or
- two consecutive semi-monthly payments.
BCBSNC Credit Union forgives your loan payment when you send us a completed voucher** for each loan skipped and a $20 fee for each loan skipped. The voucher must be received and the fee must be paid at least 3 days before the first skipped payment and the fee must be paid in cash, certified funds, or a withdrawal from your CU account.
The principal and interest on your loan will be carried over to the end of the term. In other words, using the "Skip-A-Payment" option on your loan does not change your payment amount, but it does extend the loan term. Your next payment due date is advanced and the interest continues to accrue. It's that easy!
Contact BCBSNC for more inforamtion.
* (Loans that DO NOT qualify are Overdraft Protection, Credit Rebuilding, Emergency Loans, and VisaTM credit cards.)
** Contact BCBSNC to receive a voucher.

Scam Alert: Consumers should be on the lookout for automated phone calls pretending to be from your bank or credit union. The message says that your card has been suspended and asks you to contact their security department at the telephone number provided. When customers call the number, an automated system tells them to enter their card number, expiration date, and PIN in order to activate fraud protection on their accounts. This scam, called "vishing", is an attempt to steal your personal information including card numbers, expiration dates, and PINs for your debit and credit cards. The email version of this scam is called "phishing".
TIP: Never give your private information to someone you don't know who calls you on the phone. If you get an automated call that tells you to call another number, look up the correct number to call on your own. For example, call your credit card company at the phone number listed on the back of your credit or debit card or call your bank at the number listed on your bank statement.
If you've responded to one of these calls or been the victim of a similar scam, please contact Attorney General Roy Cooper's Consumer Protection Division for assistance at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.This message brought to you on behalf of North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Raising Money-Smart Kids
Every year, American children receive over $15 billion in allowance, gifts and wages - reason enough to start teaching children money management and consumer skills at a young age. The following tips can make the difference between a child who grows up to be financially secure - and one who doesn't.
Teach by example: The best way to instill good financial habits is by "walking the talk." For instance, when you go shopping, include your kids in the process - planning, budgeting, and comparing prices and quality. If they urge you to buy something that is over budget, explain that spending more on the item you're purchasing today is not as important as saving up for something else you need or want in the future.
Live within your means: Children who learn to prioritize their spending learn the most valuable money management lesson: to live within their means. Reinforce the message by not jumping for the credit cards or giving extra money just because your children ask. When kids want an expensive "status" item, like hundred-dollar athletic shoes, consider having them pay the portion of the price that exceeds what you think is reasonable. They'll appreciate the item more and may think twice about paying that much when they outgrow this pair in six months. If you choose, go ahead and lend money, but treat it like a bank loan. Charge reasonable interest and set a time frame for repayment - it will teach them how loans and credit in the real world truly work.
Encourage savings: For your sake and theirs, encourage your children to make saving a fixed category in their spending plan. Discuss goals and calculate how much should be put away each month. Break down savings into long-term, for college or a car, and short-term, for a new bike or a senior trip to Europe. If you see your children about to make a mistake in spending their allowance, let them. Better to learn on a small scale now, than lose money with big mistakes later.
It's never too early (or too late) to develop healthy financial habits. The rewards of wise money management are the same for adults and children alike - a greater appreciation of what you have, a sense of empowerment when you reach your goals, and long-term financial security.
